Overview

The Tarsar Marsar Trek is considered one of the most beautiful and challenging high-altitude alpine lake treks in the Kashmir Valley region of India. Spanning across roughly 63 kilometers, the trek takes you through breathtaking mountain landscapes, lush green meadows filled with colorful flowers, gurgling streams, small villages, and serene high-altitude lakes. The trek starts in the little hamlet of Aru, located around a 2-hour drive from Srinagar. The first day is a relatively easy warm-up walk through gentle slopes and thick pine forests until you reach your first campsite, located in an open meadow by a gushing stream. The next few days take you across steep ascents and descents over mountain ridges and passes, with spectacular views of surrounding snow-capped Himalayan peaks, including Kolhoi, Sirbal, and Marsar itself. A major highlight of the trek is Vishansar Lake, located at an altitude of 3710 meters. After a steep final ascent, you arrive at the emerald-green lake nestled picturesquely under the shadow of Vishansar Peak. Camping by the calm, placid waters of Vishansar with stunning reflections of the mountains makes for an unforgettable experience. The next day involves a challenging trek over the high-altitude Bisnau Pass at an elevation of 3760 meters, the highest point of the entire trek. The descent from Bissau Pass leads you to the second major lake on the trek: the icy blue waters of Krishansar Lake, perched dramatically beneath towering snow-clad peaks and glaciers at an altitude of 3810 meters. Camping by Krishansar is another highlight, as you get to truly immerse yourself high up in the lap of the mighty Himalayas. The return journey from Krishansar traverses through the breathtakingly panoramic Gadsar Pass, located at an altitude of 3750 meters. You get jaw-dropping views of both Krishansar and Vishansar lakes shimmering far down in the valley. The final couple of days pass through flower-filled alpine meadows, gushing streams, quaint villages, and apple orchards before you arrive back at Aru to complete the spectacular Tarsar Marsar trek. In terms of difficulty, the Tarsar-Marsar trek is moderately challenging overall, with the major difficulty coming in the form of steep ascents and descents while crossing over high-altitude mountain passes. Prior high-altitude trekking experience is advisable before attempting this trek. The best season is summer and early autumn, between June and mid-September, when the weather is more stable and there are fewer chances of rain or snow. The incredible alpine scenery, high-altitude Himalayan lakes, stark mountain landscapes, and rich Kashmiri culture and villages encountered along the way make Tarsar Marsar one of the most unforgettable multi-day treks you can embark upon in India. It is sure to leave you spellbound!
